Significance: It has been known for years that ATRA inhibits insulin resistance. However, the mechanistic basis remains far from clear. This study suggests, for the first time, that ATRA, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the expression of a number of stress responsive proteins. Thereby, it may increase the expression of an activator of insulin transcription, NeuroD1. Given this, physicians may consider prescribing “ATRA” to treat DM.
