The 1989 Nobel prize winner in Physiology/Medicine Prof. Varmus Harold E, Somwar R and others from High Throughput Screening Core Facility, and Organic Synthesis Core Facility, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY 10065, USA; and the US National Cancer Institute, USA has published a research paper in the 27 September 2011 issue of Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. (I.F: >10) stating that “Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is a target for a small molecule identified in a screen for inhibitors of the growth of lung adenocarcinoma cell lines.”
Based on this this finding, Dr Boominathan, Founder Director-cum-chief scientist of GBMD, reports that: Natural product-based therapy for Human cancer: (6)-gingerol (6G), the pungent component of Ginger, inhibits tumor cell proliferation via down regulation of Superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1). This result suggests that Gingerol, by decreasing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the expression of SOD1. Thereby, it may increase the levels of Superoxide anions in cancer cells, which in turn may increase the expression of a number of tumor suppressor genes. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “ (6)-gingerol or its analogues” may be used to treat human cancers.
