A recent study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 )by Prof Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMDreports that: Vitamin-based Life-span extension therapy: Cholecalciferol inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian life span via up regulation of its target gene.

Significance: This study suggests that Cholecalciferol, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase). Thereby, it may promote (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; and (2) insulin sensitivity.  Given that sunlight boosts the production of Vitamin D, exposing one to the optimal level of sunlight may increase longevity by suppressing the expression of p70S6 Kinase. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing Cholecalciferol or its analogues may be used to extend the life span of an individual.

Undisclosed information: How Cholecalciferol decreases the expression of p70S6 Kinase
