A recent study from the Division of Hematology, Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA; The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, Columbus, OH, USA; The James Cancer Hospital, The Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA shows that Transcription factor foxo1 is a negative regulator of NK cell maturation and function. This study was published in the 10 March  2015 issue of Immunity (the number 1 journal in the field of Immunological research with an impact factor of  19.748) by Prof Yu J, Deng Y, and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Natural product-based Immune augmentation therapy: (6)-Gingerol, a pungent component of Ginger, promotes NK cell maturation and function via up regulation of its target gene.

Significance:

This study suggests, for the first time, that (6)-Gingerol, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the expression of FOXO1. Thereby, it may promote NK cell maturation and function. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing (6)-Gingerol or its analogues” may be used to (1) increase NK cell function; and (2) eradicate large solid tumors.
