A recent study from the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Medicine, McMaster University, Main Street West, Hamilton, Canada; Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, McMaster University, 1280 Main Street West, Hamilton, ON L8N 3Z5, Canada shows that AMPK Activation of Muscle Autophagy Prevents Fasting-Induced Hypoglycemia and Myopathy during Aging This study was published in the 2 June  2015 issue of Cell Metabolism (the number 1 journal in metabolism with an impact factor of 16.747) by Prof Steinberg GR, Bujak AL, and others.

Significance:

This study suggests, for the first time, a Natural product-based therapy for Myopathy. Berberine, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may: (1) induce autophagy; (2) maintain blood sugar level during fasting; (3) decrease aging-associated myopathy; (4) and inhibit mitochondrial dysfunctionThus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Berberine or its analogues” may be used to maintain blood sugar level during fasting and decrease aging-associated myopathy.
