What they say: Introduction:
A recent study from the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology, Smilow Research Center, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, NYU School of Medicine, 522 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016, USA shows that “Voluntary Running Triggers VGF-Mediated Oligodendrogenesis to Prolong the Lifespan of Snf2h-Null Ataxic Mice.” This study was published in the 11 October 2016 issue of the Journal “Cell Reports” by Prof David J. Picketts, Dr. Matías Alvarez-Saavedra and others.
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Natural product therapy for brain repair and Life-span extension: Ursolic acid, found in Tulsi and apple peels, , among others, increases VGF and BDNF expression, promotes Oligodendrocytes (OP) proliferation, triggers myelination on neurons, reverts neural damage, produces anti-depressant like effects, and prolongs lifespan via up-regulation of its target gene
What we say: Research Findings:
This study suggests a natural product-based therapy for brain repair and life-span extension.
Ursolic acid, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of VGF and BDNF. Thereby, it may: 1) promote OP proliferation, 2) trigger myelination on neurons, 3) revert neural damage, 4) confer protection against brain ischemia, 5) promote consolidation of hippocampal memory, 6) produce anti-depressant like effects, 7) enhance glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, 8) decrease stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine levels and blood pressure, and finally, as a consequence, 9) prolong lifespan
Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Ursolic acid or its analogs” can be used to promote brain repair, treat neurodegenerative diseases (such as multiple sclerosis), and extend the lifespan of an individual.
