Introduction: What they say
A study from Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease and Department of Neurology, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94158, USA and Department of Developmental Biology, Washington University School of Medicine, Saint Louis, MO 63110, USA shows that Prolonged Administration of Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Mitigates Age-Associated Physiological Decline in Mice. This research paper was published (online) in the 27 October 2016 issue of the journal “Cell Metabolism” [One of the best research journals in Metabolism with an I.F of 17.565+] by Prof. Shin-ichiro Imai, Kathryn F. Mills and others.
What we say:
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Natural product-based anti-ageing therapy: Hesperidin, found in Citrus fruits, increases NMN levels, decreases age-associated weight gain, augments energy metabolism, improves physical activity and insulin sensitivity, promotes healthy lipid profile, and improves eye function via down regulation of its target gene
What is known?
Prof. Shin-ichiro Imai’s research team has recently shown that administering mice with NMN, for a year, results in mitigation of age-associated physiological decline, such as a) increased body weight; b) decreased energy metabolism plus utilization; c) decreased physical activity; d) increased insulin resistance; e) increased lipid profile; f) decreased eye function; g) decreased mitochondrial oxidative metabolism; and i) increased mitonuclear protein imbalance.
From Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests, for the first time, a natural product-based therapy for age-associated physiological decline.
Hesperidin, by decreasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the levels of Nampt and NMN. Thereby, it may: (1) increase plasma NMN levels and tissue NAD+ availability; (2) prevent age-associated weight-gain; (3) enhance energy metabolism and physical activity; (4) increase insulin sensitivity and lipid profiles; (5) prevent age-associated gene expression pattern; (6) augment mitochondrial respiratory capacity; (7) improves eye function; and (8) improve bone mineral density.
Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Hesperidin or its analogues” may be used to suppress age-associated overall physiological decline; and improve health/life span.
