What is known?

Prof. Sarah L. Gaffen’s research team has recently shown that activation of IL-17R axis protects against Oral Candidiasis via up-regulation of β-defensin 3 (BD3). They have further shown that β-defensin-3-deficient animals are susceptible to oral candidiasis.


From Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:

This study suggests, for the first time, a natural product-based therapy for Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC). Rhamnetin, by decreasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of IL-17R and antimicrobial peptide β-defensin 3 (BD3, Defb3). Thereby, it may protect against Oropharyngeal Candidiasis.

Thereby, it may: (1) increase CXCL5 expression; (2) promote neutrophil recruitment; (3) promote clearance of pulmonary pathogen such as Klebsiella pneumoniae; and (4) strengthen mucosal immunity against pulmonary pathogens.

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Rhamnetin or its analogs” may be used to treat Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC).
