Introduction: What they say

A study from the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15261, USA; and Department of Mucosal and Salivary Biology, King’s College London, London SE1 1UL, UK shows that “IL-17 Receptor Signaling in Oral Epithelial Cells Is Critical for Protection against Oropharyngeal Candidiasis.” This research paper was published online in the 27 October 2016 issue of the journal “Cell Host and microbe” [One of the best research journals in “Infectious biology” with an I.F of 12+] by Prof. Sarah L. Gaffen, Heather R. Conti and others.

What we say:

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Natural product therapy for Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC): Ursolic acid, found in Tulsi and apple peels, increases IL-17R and antimicrobial peptide ß-defensin 3 (BD3, Defb3) expression and promotes resistance against infections caused by Candida albicans via up-regulation of its target gene

What is known?

Prof. Sarah L. Gaffen’s research team has recently shown that activation of IL-17R axis protects against Oral Candidiasis via up-regulation of β-defensin 3 (BD3). They have further shown that β-defensin-3-deficient animals are susceptible to oral candidiasis.

From Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:

This study suggests, for the first time, a natural product-based therapy for Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC). Ursolic acid, by decreasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of IL-17R and antimicrobial peptide β-defensin 3 (BD3, Defb3). Thereby, it may protect against Oropharyngeal Candidiasis.
