 What they say: Introduction

A recent study from the Department of Genetics, Paul F. Glenn Laboratories for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging Harvard Medical School, Boston,USA; and Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, The University of New South Wales, Australia shows that Sirtuin-2 induces the checkpoint kinase BubR1 to increase lifespan. This study was published in the 1 July  2014 issue of the journal  “EMBO” by Prof Sinclair, North BJ, and others.

What we say

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that:  Natural product-derived Lifespan extension therapy: Saponin, found in Panax Japonicus and Soapworts among others,  increases life span via up-regulation of its target gene BubR1

What is known?

I have recently published that  Saponin may: (1) increase Spermidine levels, augment autophagy, mitophagy and mitochondrial respiration, lower systemic blood pressure, and protect from cardiac diseases; and (2) increase NMN levels, decrease age-associated weight gain, augment energy metabolism, improve physical activity and insulin sensitivity, promote healthy lipid profile, and improve eye function

From Research Findings to Therapeutic Opportunity

This study suggests a natural product-based life extension therapy. Saponinby increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of BuBR1.

Thereby, it may: (1) delay diseases of aging; (2) slow down aging; and (3) prolong median life span. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing Saponin or its analogues or Saponin in combination with any of the known anti-ageing drug may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (figs. 1-3).
