Natural product-derived antiviral therapy against chikungunya (CHIKV) and Zika (ZIKV) viruses. γ-Bisabolene, one of the components in Cardamom, Cubeb, lemon, and Oregano among others, decreases spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (SAT) expression, depletes spermidine and Spermine levels, and restricts Chikungunya and Zika viruses replication via up regulation of its target gene, 17/December/2016, 10.19 am

Introduction

A study from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Michigan Medical School, USA; and Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, University of Michigan Medical School, USA shows that “Haploinsufficiency of myostatin protects against aging-related declines in muscle function and enhances the longevity of mice.” This study was published in the 15 March 2015 issue of the Journal “Aging cell” (the no.1 journal in aging research) by Prof. Faulkner JA, Mendias CL, and others.

What we say:

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Lifespan extension therapy: Amiodarone, an antiarrhythmic drug, decreases aging-related decline in muscle function and enhances the longevity of mammals via down regulation of Myostatin.

What is known?

Prof. Faulkner JA and his team had shown recently that deficiency of myostatin protects against aging-related loss in muscle function and extends the maximum lifespan of mice.

Amiodarone is an antiarrhythmic medication that is used to treat ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, wide complex tachycardia, atrial fibrillation and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.  It is approved as a second line agent in the treatment of Cardiac arrest.  A few studies also suggest that Amiodarone functions as a metastasis suppressor.

From Significance of the study to Therapeutic opportunity

Myostatin is known to function as a key modulator of muscle mass and function.  This study suggests, for the first time, that Amiodarone, by decreasing the expression of its target gene Myostatin, it may protect against aging-related loss of muscle function.  And, thereby, extend the maximum lifespan of mice.

Together, this study suggests that pharmacological formulations encompassing “Amiodarone or its pharmacologically safer analogs or Amiodarone plus any of the known compounds that promote longevity” may be used to enhance enhance longevity.
