From Research Findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests a Natural product-based therapy for brain repair and lifespan extension. Matrine, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of VGF and BDNF.
Thereby, it may: 1) promote OP proliferation, 2) trigger myelination on neurons, 3) revert neural damage, 4) confer protection against brain ischemia, 5) promote consolidation of hippocampal memory, 6) produce anti-depressant like effects, 7) enhance glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, 8) decrease stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine levels and blood pressure, and finally, as a consequence, 9) prolong lifespan (figures 1-3).
Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Matrine or its analogue either alone or in combination with other drugs” can be used to promote brain repair, treat neurodegenerative diseases (such as multiple sclerosis), and extend the lifespan of an individual.
