Switching to ketogenic diet may extend lifespan: The ketone metabolite β-hydroxybutyrate inhibits the expression of ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian life span, 6/April/2017, 6.44 am

Natural product-derived therapy for Malaria: β-Cryptoxanthin(BCX), found abundantly in Satsuma mandarin, among others,  increases Ferroportin expression, decreases intracellular iron accumulation, inhibits cellular damage, prevents hemolysis, and inhibits malaria infection, via upregulation of its target gene, 5/April/2018, 1.40 am

Gas therapy for blood sugar disease (autoimmune diabetes (TIDM)): The gasotransmitter Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) increases PD-L1 expression,  augments Tregs function, promotes immune tolerance, increases pancreatic β-cell proliferation and regeneration, increases insulin secretion, improves insulin sensitivity, increases energy utilization, and reverses TIDM, via up regulation of its target gene, 6/April/2018,  7.09 am

What they say:

A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published,  in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 ),  by Prof Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C and others.

What we say:

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Switching to ketogenic diet may extend lifespan: The ketone metabolite β-hydroxybutyrate inhibits the expression of ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian life span

Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:

β-hydroxybutyrate, by  increasing  the expression of its target gene, it may suppress Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) expression. Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mechanistic insight into how beta-hydroxy butyrate may extend lifespan.  Beta-hydroxy butyrate may promote longevity by suppressing the expression of p70 S6 kInase

Figure 2. Beta-hydroxy butyrate functions as a longevity-promoting agent through downregulation of p70 S6 Kinase.

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “β-hydroxybutyrate or its analogs, either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s),” may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 1).
