An essential component of contraceptive/birth control pill 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) may extend lifespan and healthspan: 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE), one of the components of contraceptives and birth control pills, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian lifespan, via upregulation of its target gene, 11/August/2017, 8.54 am

Androgens are called into action to attenuate arthritic pain: Testosterone-based therapy for inflammation and arthritis:Testosterone, a male reproductive hormone, increases IL-9 levels, augments proliferation of ILC2s (type 2 innate lymphoid cells) and regulatory T (Treg) cells, promotes resolution of inflammation, attenuates cartilage destruction, decreases bone loss, and inhibits pathological features associated with arthritis via up-regulation of its target genes, 11/August/2018, 8.25 am

What they say:

A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published, in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 ), by Prof Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C, and others.

What we say

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMDreports, for the first time, that: An essential component of contraceptive/birth control pill 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) may extend lifespan and healthspan: 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE), one of the components of contraceptives and birth control pills, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian lifespan, via upregulation of its target gene

Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:

17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE), a component of birth control/contraceptive pills, has also been shown to aid in the treatment of gynecological disorders, prostate cancer, and others. Evidently, 17α-Estradiol has been shown to extend male lifespan. However, the molecular basis of which remains unclear.

17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE), by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) expression. Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to the bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mechanistic insight into how  17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) may extend lifespan. 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) inhibits p70 S6 kinase expression and increases the expression of other longevity- promoting genes.

Figure 2. The chemical structure of 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE). 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) functions as a longevity promoting agent through down-regulation of p70S6 kinase

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE)  or its analogs,  either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s), may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 2).

Given the mechanistic basis of how estrogen (Boominathan L, 2018) and its derivative 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) may function as longevity-promoting agents, obstetricians and gynecologists and general practitioners may consider: encouraging their needy patients to take 17α-Ethinyl Estradiol (EE) or beginning a clinical trial.
