The contraceptive/birth control pill component Progestin may extend lifespan and healthspan: Progestin, one of the components of contraceptives and birth control pills, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian lifespan, via upregulation of its target gene, 18/August/2017, 12.14 am

Relax (in) your way to say no to myocardial diseases: Relaxin-based therapy for cardiac repair and myocardial infarction: Relaxin, a reprodutive hormone,  increases Agrin expression, activates Yap and ERK-mediated signaling,  replaces scar tissue with functional cardiomyocytes, and promotes cardiomyocyte regeneration and repair after myocardial infarction, via up regulation of its target gene, 17/August/2018, 11.59 pm

Unknown function of the known steroid hormone in targeting cancer stem cells in Myeloid leukaemia (ML): Progesterone (P4), a steroid hormone, inhibits cytosolic aminotransferase BCAT1 expression, increases a-ketoglutarate levels, promotes degradation of HIF1a levels, increases DNA demethylase levels, promotes hypomethylation, increases the expression of tumor suppressor genes, inhibits leukaemia-initiating potential of AML cells, promotes differentiation of AML cells, and inhibits cancer progression in AML via up-regulation of its target gene, 18/August/2017, 12.31 am

What they say:

A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published, in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 ), by Prof Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C, and others.

What we say

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMDreports, for the first time, that: The contraceptive/birth control pill component Progestin may extend lifespan and healthspan: Progestin, one of the components of contraceptives and birth control pills, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian lifespan, via upregulation of its target gene

Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:

Progestin, a component of birth control/contraceptive pills, has also been shown to aid in the treatment of other gynecological conditions.

This study suggests, for the first time, that Progestin, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) expression. Thereby, it may promote (1) resistance to the bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mechanistic insight into how Progestin may extend lifespan. Progestin inhibits p70 S6 kinase expression and increases the expression of other longevity- promoting genes.

Figure 2. The chemical structure of Progestin. Progestin functions as a longevity promoting agent through down-regulation of p70S6 kinase

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Progestin or its analogs,  either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s), may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 2).

Given the mechanistic basis of how Progestin may function as a longevity-promoting agent, obstetricians and gynecologists and general practitioners may consider: encouraging their needy patients to take Progestin or beginning a clinical trial.
