What they say?
A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published, in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 ), by Prof Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C and others.
What we say:
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Eating ample amounts of fruit Pomegranate may extend your lifespan: Urolithin A (UA)-based combinatorial therapy for Lifespan extension: Urolithin A (UA), derived from Pomegranate, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian life span, via up regulation of its target gene
Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
A very recent study from the Amazentis SA, EPFL Innovation Park, Bâtiment C, Lausanne, Switzerland shows that “ The mitophagy activator urolithin A is safe and induces a molecular signature of improved mitochondrial and cellular health in humans.” This study was published, in the 14 June 2019 issue of of the journal Nature Metabolism, by Prof. Chris Rinsch, Andreux PA and others. This study and other studies suggest that urolithin A improves muscle health in older individuals and extends lifespan. However, the mechanism of action of this natural compound is largely unknown yet.
This study provides, for the first time, mechanistic insights into how urolithin A functions as a longevity-promoting agent. Urolithin A, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) expression. Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).
Figure 1. Mechanistic insight into how Urolithin A (UA) may extend lifespan. Urolithin A (UA) inhibits p70 S6 kInase expression and increases the expression of other longevity- promoting genes and extends lifespan.
Figure 2. The chemical structure of Urolithin A (UA), Urolithin A (UA), derived from ellagic acid (found commonly in Pomegranate, strawberry and others) using gut bacterias in the intestine, may extend lifespan, through down regulation of p70S6 kinase; and up regulation of a number of longevity-promoting genes

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Urolithin A (UA) or its analogues, either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s),“ may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 1). Together, this study suggests, for the first time, that consuming ample amounts of Urolithin A (UA) regularly may extend health and life span.
