What they say:

A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published, in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 37.205 ),  by Prof. Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C, and others.

What we say:

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that:  Consuming optimal amount of Flax seeds will make you live longer: α-Linoleic acid, derived from Flax/Lin-seeds,  inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian lifespan by regulating the expression of its target genes

From research findings to Therapeutic Opportunity:

This study suggests, for the first time, with detailed mechanistic insights, Lin/Flax-seeds, and its components, such as  α-Linoleic acid, may extend the lifespan of humans.  α-Linoleic acid, by regulating the expression of its target gene, it may suppress the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase). Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mechanistic insights into how Linseed/Flax seed-derived compound α-Linoleic acid can extend  mammalian lifespan.  α-Linoleic acid  functions as a longevity-promoter by decreasing the expression of p70S6 Kinase and increasing the expression of a number of longevity-promoting genes.

Figure 2. The chemical structures of  α-Linoleic acid , derived from Flax/Lin seeds, extends lifespan through down regulation of p70 S6 kinase.

Figure 3. While genetic ablation of p70S6 Kinase extends lifespan, α-Linoleic acid, by decreasing the expression of p70S6 Kinase, it increases insulin sensitivity, promotes resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction, and extends lifespan.

Thus, a pharmacological formulation encompassing “α-Linoleic acid or its analogs, either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s),” can be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 2).

Given the mechanistic basis as to how α-Linoleic acid, derived from Lin/Flax seeds, can extend lifespan of humans, its consumption can be increased.

Together, this study provide mechanistic insights into how to go about living longer by consuming Lin/Flax seeds
