On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Natural product-based Lifespan extension therapy:  Polysaccharides, derived from Lycium barbarum L (LBL),  inhibit the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extend mammalian lifespan by regulating the expression of their target genes


From research findings to Therapeutic Opportunity: 

This study suggests, for the first time, with detailed mechanistic insights, that polysaccharides(LBLP)-derived from Lycium barbarum L (LBL) may extend the lifespan of humans.  LBLP, by regulating the expression of its target gene, it may suppress the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase). Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity (fig. 1).

Figure 3. While genetic ablation of p70S6 Kinase extends lifespan, Lycium barbarum L (LBL).-derived Polysaccharides (LBLP), by decreasing the expression of p70S6 Kinase,  they increase insulin sensitivity, promote resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction, and extend lifespan.

Thus, a pharmacological formulation encompassing “Lycium barbarum L (LBL)-derived Polysaccharides (LBLP) or their analogs, either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s),” may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 2).

Given the mechanistic basis as to how Polysaccharides of LBL (LBLP) can extend lifespan of humans, its consumption can be increased. 

Together, this study suggests how to go about living longer by consuming Lycium barbarum L (LBL).-derived Polysaccharides (LBLP).
