From research findings to Therapeutic Opportunity: 

Although Licorice (meaning sweet root)/Glycyrrhiza glabra is used for medicinal purposes, for thousand of years, in Ayurvedic medicine and others, its mechanism of action remains elusive. Besides,  in Ayurvedic medicine literature, it is mentioned that Licorice may function as an anti-ageing agent, but its mechanism of action remains unclear up until now. 

This study suggests, for the first time, that Licorice-derived compounds function as longevity-promoters. Transchalcone, Licochalcone A and glycyrrhizin (18β-Glycyrrhetinic acid (18b-GA) (derived from Licorice)by increasing the expression of their target gene, they may: (a) increase the expression of BuBR1 (BUB1 Mitotic Checkpoint Serine/Threonine Kinase); (b) decrease the expression of p70 S6 Kinase; and (c) regulate the expression of a number of longevity-promoting molecules (fig. 1). Thereby, it may: (1) increase insulin sensitivity; (2) attenuate cognitive impairment; (3) delay diseases of aging; (4) slow down cardiac aging; (5) promote resistance to bone, immune and motor dysfunction; (6) promote tissue rejuvenation; and (7) prolong median lifespan.

Thus, a pharmaceutical mixture encompassing Transchalcone, Licochalcone A and glycyrrhizin (18β-Glycyrrhetinic acid (18b-GA), either alone or in combination with other drugs, may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig.2).
