A recent study from the Department of Radiation Oncology, Cancer Institute and Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery), and Department of Pathology, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California, USA has reported that “Neurotrophic factor GDNF promotes survival of salivary stem cells.” This study was published in the August 1 2014 Journal Clinical Investigation (The number 1 journal in Clinical General Medicine) by Prof  Le QT,  Xiao, and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Therapeutic Insights into the treatment of Xerostomia: Stress-induced-gene product p53 inhibits survival of Salivary stem cells via up regulation of its target gene. This study suggests that p53, by increasing the expression of  its target gene, it may inhibit the survival of salivary stem cells. Thereby, suppressing saliva secretion.  Together, this study suggests that pharmacological formulations encompassing “p53 suppressors” may be used to treat Xerostomia.

Significance: This study provides molecular insights into how stress promotes Xerostomia.  Furthermore, this study offers a therapeutic insight into how one could restore the function of salivary glands in patients suffering from Xerostomia.
