A study from the Department of Pathology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA; and College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, New York, USA shows that “A targetable GATA2-IGF2 axis confers aggressiveness in lethal prostate cancer.” This study was published in the 9 Feb  2015 issue of the Journal “Cancer cell” (the no.1 journal in cancer biology with an impact factor of 23.893) by Prof Domingo-Domenech J, Vidal SJ, and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Vitamin-based therapy stalls metastatic Prostate cancer spread: Vitamin-E (α-Tocopherol)  suppresses GATA2-IGF2 axis and halts the progression of prostate cancer.

Significance:   Given that prostate cancer is/had: (1) one of the most frequently diagnosed cancer in males; (2) the sixth leading cause of cancer death in males globally; and (3) caused 256,000 deaths in 2010, there is an urgent need to find an effective therapy for prostate cancer. This study suggests, for the first time, that Vitamin-E (α-Tocopherol), by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the expression of its target gene IGF2. Thereby, it may inhibit the GATA2-IGF2 axis in aggressive prostate cancer. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Vitamin-E (α-Tocopherol) or its analogues” may be used to inhibit the progression of prostate cancer.
