A recent study from the miRagen Therapeutics, Inc, Lookout Road, Boulder, California, USA shows that “Inhibition of miR-15 protects against cardiac ischemic injury.” This study was published in the 6 January  2012 issue of Circulation Research (the number 1 research journal in the field of Cardiology)  by Profs. van Rooij EOlson ENHullinger TG and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Natural product-based therapy for Rescuing the malfunctioning cardiomyocytes in cardiac ischemic patients: Berberine, an isoquinoline derivative alkaloid isolated from medicinal herbs, protects against cardiac ischemic injury via up regulation of its target gene

Significance: 

Given that: (1)  cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of death worldwide; (2) in India, in 2004, 14.6 lakhs deaths (14% of total deaths) were due to ischemic heart disease; and were expected to be doubled by 2015; and (3) the global economic cost spent in the treatment of cardiovascular disease in 2011 was little more than 10 billion US dollars, there is an urgent need to find a safe and natural product-based treatment, that is free of side effects, to induce regeneration of cardiomyocytes that were lost in Myocardial patients.

This study suggests, for the first time, that Berberine, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may reduce infarct size, cardiac remodelling and enhance cardiac function.  Thereby, it may: (1) promote cardimyocyte survival/regeneration; and (2) protect against cardiac ischemic injury.  Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Berberine or its analogues” may be used to improve cardiac function after myocardial infarction
