A study from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Michigan Medical School, USA; and Department of Molecular & Integrative Physiology, University of Michigan Medical School, USA shows that “Haploinsufficiency of myostatin protects against aging-related declines in muscle function and enhances the longevity of mice.” This study was published in the 15 March  2015 issue of the Journal “Aging cell” (the no.1 journal in aging) by Prof. Faulkner JA, Mendias CL, and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Adding more years into your life with Ginger: 6-Gingerol, a pungent component of Ginger,  decreases aging-related decline in muscle function and enhances the longevity of mammals via down regulation of myostatin.

Significance:   Myostatin is known to function as a key modulator of muscle mass and function. Prof. Faulkner JA and his team had shown recently that deficiency of myostatin protects against aging-related loss in muscle function and extends the maximum lifespan of mice.

I had published earlier that 6-Gingerol: 1) extends mammalian life span via down regulation of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase); 2) increases the expression of ERBB2/Her2 and promotes cardiac regeneration; (3) activates the immune system via down regulation of PD-1; (4)  increases the expression of Growth hormone (GH); (5) enhances wound healing in diabetic patients; (6) promotes an insulin-sensitized state via up regulation of reprogramming protein Lin28; (7)  decreases hypertension via down regulation of angiotensin converting enzyme-1 (ACE-1); and (8) increases the expression of a longevity gene telomerase (hTERT).

The present study suggests, for the first time, that 6-Gingerol, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of Myostatin. Thereby, (1) it may protect against aging-related loss of muscle function; (2) and extend the maximum lifespan of mice. Together, this study suggests that 6-Gingerol may enhance longevity by suppressing Myostatin. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing 6-Gingerol or its analogues” may be used to enhance longevity.
