A study from the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Lipid Research, Washington University School of Medicine, MO 63110, USA; and Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, Washington University School of Medicine, MO 63110, USA  shows that Deletion of Macrophage Vitamin D Receptor Promotes Insulin Resistance and Monocyte Cholesterol Transport to Accelerate Atherosclerosis in Mice.” This study was published in the 17 March  2015 issue of the Journal “Cell Reports” by Prof. Carlos Bernal-Mizrachi & Jisu Oh and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Expose yourself to optimal Sunlight to protect yourself from Diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis: Nitric oxide (NO) promotes insulin sensitivity and inhibits atherosclerosis via up regulation of its target gene Vitamin D Receptor.

Significance:   Given that (1)  more than 387 million people worldwide are affected by Diabetes mellitus (DM); (2) the life-long painful injection/drug treatment is required to treat DM; and (3) the global economic cost spent for (i) diabetes treatment in 2014 was little more than 600 billion US dollars; and (ii) atherosclerosis treatment in 2011 was little more than 10 billion US dollars, there is an urgent need to find a better way to treat Diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis without side effects. This study suggests, for the first time, that NO, by increasing the expression of its target gene Vitamin D Receptor, it may: (1) inhibit gluconeogenesis; (2) increase insulin sensitivity; (2) inhibit accumulation of cholesterol into plaques; and (3) rescue the metabolic phenotype associated with diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “NO activators may be used to treat diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis. Given that sunlight boosts the production of (i) Nitric oxide; and (2) 1, 25 dihydroxy Vitamin-D3, one may expose to the optimal level of sunlight to protect himself/herself from Diabetes mellitus and atherosclerosis.
