A recent study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 31.477 ) by Prof Dominic J. Significance: It has been shown earlier that massage therapy cures a number of human diseases. However, the mechanistic basis of which remains elusive. This study suggests, for the first time, that massage (moderate pressure–pressure receptor-mechanotransduction), by regulating the expression of its target gene, it may (1) inhibit the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase); and (2) increase the expression of longevity-promoting gene Sirtuin-1. Thereby, it may promote (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) brain health Together, this study provides molecular mechanistic insights into how massage therapy may aid one to extend his/her life span. Thus, Physicians may consider recommending massage therapy to the needy patients.
