Significance: This study provides, for the first time, a molecular mechanistic explanation as to why there are more heart attacks during winter. Furthermore, this study has identified, for the first time, PRDM16 as a gene that is responsible for the poor performance of cardiomyocytes during the winter. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “PRDM16 inhibitor or its upstream regulator“ may be used to protect one from heart attack during the winter and improve cardiac performance.
