It is known for years that prolonged alcohol consumption impairs memory and learning. However, molecular basis of which remains unknown. Dr L Boominathan, Director-cum-chief scientist of GBMD, reports that: Prolonged ethanol consumption impairs the expression of Brain-derived Neurotrophic factor [BDNF] via up regulation of its target miRNA. Thereby, it impairs learning and memory. This study may aid in designing strategy to treat and cure the learning and memory deficit caused by prolonged alcohol consumption.
