A recent study from the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, Boston Children’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA; Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, USA; and Harvard Stem Cell Institute, Boston, Massachusetts, USA shows that “LIN28 cooperates with WNT signaling to drive invasive intestinal and colorectal adenocarcinoma in mice and humans.” This study was published in the 15 April 2015 issue of Genes & Development (Impact factor: 12.44) by Prof Daley GQ, Ho-Chou Tu and others.
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: MiRNA-based therapy for Intestinal cancer: MiRNA-100 inhibits metastatic adenocarcinoma via down regulation of Lin-28

Significance:
Given that (1) more than 1 million people every year worldwide are affected by Colorectal cancer; (2) the number of deaths had increased from 490,000 in 1990 to 715,000 in 2010; (3) colorectal cancer is the second and third most frequent cause of cancer in women and men, respectively; (4) colorectal cancer is more common in developed countries than in developing countries; and (5) the global economic cost spent for colorectral cancer treatment is enormous, there is an urgent need to find: (1) a cheaper alternative to the existing expensive drugs; and (2) a side-effect-free drug.
Lin-28 has been shown to (1) be over expressed in a number of cancers: (2) promote tumor proliferation, invasion and metastasis; and (2) promote cancer stem cell proliferation. This study suggests that MiRNA-100, by decreasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress the expression of Lin28. Thereby, it may inhibit metastatic progression of adinocarcinoma. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “MiRNA-100 activators“ may be used to inhibit the progression of colorectal adenocarcinoma.
