A recent study from the Department of Pathology, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA;  Department of Dermatology, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA; and Department of Medicine, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA shows that “Alopecia areata is driven by cytotoxic T lymphocytes and is reversed by JAK inhibition.”

This study was published in the August, 17 2014 issue of Nature Medicine (The number 1 journal in Medicine with an IF of ~35) by Prof. Clynes R, Xing L and others from the Department of Pathology, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA;  Department of Dermatology, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA; and Department of Medicine, Columbia University, New York, New York, USA

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports here that: MiRNAs-based therapy for Alopecia areata: A pharmacological mixture containing miRNA-375 and miRNA-107 reverses Alopecia areata via down regulation of its target genes.  This study suggests, for the first time, that miRNA-375 and miRNA-107, by up regulating their target genes, they may reverse alopecia areata.   Together, this study suggests that pharmacological formulations encompassing “ miRNA-375 and miRNA-107 or small molecule compounds that activate the expression of  miRNA-375 and miRNA-107 may be used to treat Alopecia areata.
