Prof. Helen M Blau (from Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California, USA) has published a research paper in the prestigious Journal Nature Medicine (Feb, 2014) stating that “Rejuvenation of the muscle stem cell population restores strength to injured aged muscles.” This study suggests that transient inhibition of p38α and p38β strengthens muscles of aged mice.
In connection with this finding, Dr L Boominathan, Director-cum-chief scientist of GBMD, reports that: Molecular mechanistic insights into how Androgens function as Muscle strengtheners: Androgens restore the strength of injured aged muscles by rejuvenating muscle stem cell population. This finding further suggests that androgens increase muscle stem cell population via up regulation of their target miRNA. Furthermore, this exciting finding opens up a new therapeutic opportunity to help elderly human patients to repair muscle damage.
