Significance: This study suggests, for the first time, that Chitosan, by suppressing the expression of its target gene, it may inhibit acute lung injury. Thereby, it may inhibit the progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome.  Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Chitosan or small molecule compounds isolated from Chitosan extract  may be used to inhibit the progression of acute respiratory distress syndrome.
