Significance:  It is known for years that EGF signalling promotes insulin sensitivity. However, mechanistic basis of this is far from clear.  This study suggests, for the first time, that  EGF, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase insulin-secreting cell mass. Thereby, it may increase the insulin sensitivity.  Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “EGF or its activator”  may be used to treat DM.
