Significance: This study suggests, for the first time, that miRNA-125 inhibits hippocampal neurodegeneration and memory loss. It has earlier been shown that miRNA-125 suppresses the expression of a number of stress activated genes. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “miRNA-125 or small molecule compounds that activate the expression of miR-125” may be used to treat neurodegenerative disorders, including amnesia.
