Significance: This study suggests, for the first time, that prolonged induction of stress-induced p53 promotes hippocampal neurodegeneration and memory loss. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “p53 inhibitor or small molecule compounds or miRNAs or SiRNAs that decrease the expression of p53” may be used to treat neurodegenerative disorders, including amnesia.
