Significance: This study suggests, for the first time, that prolonged induction of stress-induced MiRNA-29 promotes hippocampal neurodegeneration and memory loss. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “MiRNA-29 inhibitor or small molecule compounds or miRNAs or SiRNAs that decrease the expression of MiRNA-29“ may be used to treat neurodegenerative disorders, including amnesia.
