A study from Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden shows that MTH1 inhibition eradicates cancer by preventing sanitation of the dNTP pool.
This study was published in the April 10, 2014 Nature [I.F >42] by Prof. Thomas H, Dr Gad H and others from Science for Life Laboratory, Division of Translational Medicine and Chemical Biology, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports here that: Vitamin-based cancer therapy: 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) inhibits cancer development by suppressing the expression of nucleotide sanitizing enzyme MTH1/NUDT1. This study may suggest that 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3), by up regulating its target gene, it may suppress the expression of MTH1/NUDT1. Together, this study suggests that pharmacological formulations encompassing “1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D(3) or its analogues” may be used in the treatment of human cancers.
