Formerly, it was customary to dress in a tallit gadol and in tefillin at home, and go to the synagogue for them in the morning prayer; but nowadays they are usually worn in the synagogue. Before the morning prayer they put on a halitol gadol and only then tefillin. The duty to wear tallit or Jewish prayer shawl and tefillin applies only to men. In most Ashkenazic communities, only married men dress in a tallit gadol, and in Sephardi communities, unmarried ones also.
