Significance:
This study suggests, for the first time, that Onion peel extract, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress the expression of mTOR. Thereby, it may: (i) increase autophagic flux; (ii) decrease reactive oxygen species; and (iii) increase the lifespan of an individual, as it has been shown earlier that decreasing the expression/activity of mTOR increases overall lifespan. Together, this study suggests that pharmacological formulations encompassing “Onion peel extract (OPE) or an active compound isolated from it” may function as longevity promoters.
