What we say:
Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports here that: Shikonin, the major component of Zicao (also known as purple gromwell, the dried root of Lithospermum erythrorhizon), activates autophagy and extend lifespan via up regulation of its target gene
From Significance of the study to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests, for the first time, that Shikonin, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may: (1) enhance autophagy, (2) promote leanness; (3) increase insulin sensitivity; (4) improve motor function; (5) increase resistance to oxidative stress; (6) alleviate ageing features; and (7) promote longevity( fig.1 &2).

Shikonin
Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Shikonin or its analogues or Shikonin plus any of the known anti-ageing compounds” may be used to increase the life span of an individual.
