What they say: Introduction:
A recent study from the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Pharmacology, Smilow Research Center, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, NYU School of Medicine, 522 First Avenue, New York, NY 10016, USA shows that Running Triggers VGF-Mediated Oligodendrogenesis to Prolong the Lifespan of Snf2h-Null Ataxic Mice. This study was published in the 11 October 2016 issue of the Journal “Cell Reports” by Prof David J. Picketts, Dr. Matías Alvarez-Saavedra and others.
What we say:
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Vitamin-based therapy for brain repair and Lifespan extension: Ascorbate increases VGF and BDNF expression, promotes Oligodendrocytes (OP) proliferation, triggers myelination on neurons, reverts neural damage, produces antidepressant like effects, and prolongs lifespan via up-regulation of its target gene

From Research Findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests a Vitamin-based therapy for brain repair and lifespan extension. Ascorbate, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of VGF and BDNF.

Figure 1. Kakadu plum. Kakadu fruit contains 2300-5300 mg/100 g of Ascorbic acid compared to 50mg/100g of Oranges. Ascorbate increases the expression of VGF and BDNF via up regulation of its target gene

Figure 2. Camu Camu (Myrciaria dubia). Camu Camu fruit contains 2800 mg/100 g of Ascorbic acid compared to 50mg/100g of Oranges. Ascorbic acid increases the expression of VGF and BDNF
Figure 3. The chemical structure of L-ascorbic acid/Vitamin-C
Thereby, it may: 1) promote oligodendrocytes proliferation, 2) promote myelination of neurons, 3) revert neural damage, 4) confer protection against brain ischemia, 5) promote consolidation of hippocampal memory, 6) produce antidepressant like effects, 7) enhance glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, and 8) decrease stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine levels and thereby reduce blood pressure. And finally, as a consequence, prolong lifespan (figures 1-3).
Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Ascorbate or its analogues either alone or in combination with other drugs” can be used to promote brain repair, treat neurodegenerative diseases (such as multiple sclerosis), and extend the lifespan of an individual.
