A study from Faculty of Medicine, Friedrich-Schiller-University, Germany shows that “Epigenetic stress responses induce muscle stem-cell ageing by Hoxa9 developmental signals.” This research paper was published in the 30 November 2016 issue of the journal “Nature” [One of the best research journals in General Science with an I.F of 38+] by Prof.Lenhard Rudolph, Stefan Tümpel, Simon Schwörer and others.

What is known?
Prof. Lenhard Rudolph’s research team has recently shown that deletion of HOXA9 in mice results in a) down regulation of inhibitors of muscle stem cells function, including Wnt, TGFß, JAK/STAT and senescence signalling; and b) improved muscle stem cells regeneration and function. Conversely, overexpression of HOXA9 has been shown to promote ageing-associated features in muscle stems cells.
From Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests, for the first time, a Swimming training-based regenerative therapy for improving muscle strength and repair in the elderly. Swimming training, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may decrease the levels of HOXA9 (fig.1).

Thereby, it may: (1) down regulate inhibitors of muscle stem cells function; and (2) improve of muscle stem cells regeneration and function.
Together, this study suggests, for the first time, that swimming training may suppress muscle stem-cell ageing, age-associated physiological decline and improve health span.
Thus, physicians may consider recommending their patients to undergo swimming training, to improve muscle repair and strength.
