A recent study from the Gastrointestinal Stem Cell Biology Laboratory, Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, University of Oxford, Oxford, UK; Translational Gastroenterology Unit, Experimental Medicine Division,,  shows that Aberrant epithelial Gremlin-1 expression initiates colonic tumorigenesis from cells outside the stem cell niche. This study was published in the 1 December 2014 issue of the Journal “Nature Medicine” [the number 1 journal in General medicine with an impact factor of 24.973] by Prof. Leedham SJ and others.

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Anticancer stem cell therapy: Gremlin-1 increases the expression of stem cell enriched protein Oct-4 via down regulation of its target gene. This study suggests, for the first time, Gremlin-1, by decreasing the expression of its target gene BMP4, it may : (1) increase the expression of Oct-4; (2) decrease the expression of tumor suppressor miRNAs; and (3) promote cancer stem cell proliferation and self-renewal. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing Gremlin-1 inhibitors” may be used to inhibit cancer stem cell proliferation and self-renewal.
