Significance:
This study suggests, for the first time, that Berberine, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may suppress the expression of mTOR. Thereby, it may: (i) increase autophagic flux; (ii) decrease reactive oxygen species; and (iii) increase the lifespan of an individual. Of interest, decreasing the expression/activity of mTOR has earlier been shown to increase overall lifespan. Together, this study suggests that pharmacological formulations encompassing “Berberine or its analogues” may function as longevity promoters.
