Significance:
Cancer suppressor p53 is mutated in more than 50% of human cancers of different tissue origin, while its pathway is altered in about 80% of tumors.
This study suggests a therapeutic strategy as to how p53-deficient/deleted or mutant p53 expressing human metastatic cancers can be cured by activating its unmutated or rarely mutated “homologous protein such as TAp63γ” .
Research Findings:
Curcumin, by decreasing the expression of its target genes, it may increase the expression of tumor suppressor TAp63γ. Thereby, it may inhibit the migration and invasion of metastatic cancer cells.
Therapeutic opportunity:
Given that Curcumin may induce the expression of TAp63γ in p53-mutated human tumors, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Curcumin or its analogues” may be used to inhibit the progression of p53-mutated invasive metastatic tumors. Taken together, this study suggests an MiRNA-based therapy for p53-mutated metastatic human tumors.
