 What they say: Introduction:

A recent study from the Department of Genetics, Paul F. Glenn Laboratories for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA; and Department of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, The University of New South Wales, Australia shows that Sirtuin-2 induces the checkpoint kinase BubR1 to increase lifespan. This study was published, in the 1 July  2014 issue of the journal  “EMBO”, by Prof Sinclair, North BJ, and others.

What we say:

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Sesame oil-derived compounds functions as a longevity promoter: Sesamin or Sesamol, derived from sesame oil or seeds, slows down cardiac aging, and increases lifespan, via up-regulation of BubR1 and others genes

From research findings to Therapeutic Opportunity:

While the uses of sesame oil, in treating a number of diseases, is known in India, in ayurvedic medicine, for centuries, Chinese centenarians have used the sesame oil preferably. However, the mechanistic basis of its beneficial effect it either in the treatment of a number of medical conditions or in extension of longevity remains obscure for centuries. This study provides, for the first time, mechanistic insights into how commonly used sesame oil and its constituents, such as Sesamin, and sesamol, may promote lifespan extension.

This study suggests, for the first time, that a therapeutic mix encompassing Sesamin and Sesamolby increasing the expression of its target gene, may: (a) increase the expression of BuBR1 (BUB1 Mitotic Checkpoint Serine/Threonine Kinase); (b) decrease the expression of p70 S6 Kinase; and (c) regulate the expression of a number of longevity-promoting molecules (fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mechanistic insights into how Sesame oil  functions as a longevity promoter.   Sesame oil-derived compounds may extend  mammalian lifespan via up-regulation of BuBR1

Figure 2. Sesame oil-derived compounds functions as a longevity-promoter through induction of BuBR1.

Figure 3. Sesame oil-derived compounds, such as Sesamin and Sesamol, functions as a longevity-promoter through induction of BuBR1.

Thereby, it may: (1) increase insulin sensitivity; (2) attenuate cognitive impairment; (3) delay diseases of aging; (4) slow down cardiac aging; (5) promote resistance to bone, immune and motor dysfunction; (6) promote tissue rejuvenation; and (7) prolong median lifespan. Thus, Sesamin or Sesamol, or its analogs, either alone or in combination with other drugs, may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig.2).
