What they say:
A study from the Institute of Healthy Ageing, Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, University College London, London WC1E 6JJ, UK shows that “Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 signaling regulates mammalian life span.” This study was published, in the 2 October 2009 issue of the Journal “Science” (I.F: 37.205 ), by Prof. Dominic J. Withers, Dr. Selman C, and others.
What we say:
On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports, for the first time, that: Live longer by consuming coconut: Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid-based Lifespan extension therapy: Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, derived from coconut oil, inhibits the expression of Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) and extends mammalian lifespan by regulating the expression of its target genes
From research findings to Therapeutic Opportunity:
This study suggests, for the first time, with detailed mechanistic insights, Cocos nucifera, commonly known as Coconut, and its component Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, which makes up to 48 to 50% of coconut oil, may extend lifespan of humans. Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, by regulating the expression of its target gene, it may suppress Ribosomal protein S6 kinase 1 (p70S6 Kinase) expression. Thereby, it may promote: (1) resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction; (2) insulin sensitivity; and (3) longevity(fig. 1).

Figure 1. Mechanistic insights into how Lauric acid or may extend mammalian lifespan. Piperine functions as a longevity-promoter by decreasing the expression of p70S6 Kinase and increasing the expression of a number of longevity-promoting genes.

Figure 2. The chemical structure of Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid. Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, derived from Coconut oil, extends lifespan through down regulation of p70 S6 kinase.

Figure 3. Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, by decreasing the expression of p70S6 Kinase, it increases insulin sensitivity, promotes resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction, and extends lifespan.

Figure 3. Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, by decreasing the expression of p70S6 Kinase, it increases insulin sensitivity, promotes resistance to bone, immune, and motor dysfunction, and extends lifespan.
Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid or its analogs, either alone or in combination with any of the known longevity-promoting compound(s),” may be used to extend the lifespan of an individual (fig. 2).
Given the mechanistic basis as to how Lauric acid or dodecanoic acid, derived from coconut oil, can extend lifespan of humans, its consumption can be increased.
