Introduction: What they say

A study from the Richard King Mellon Foundation Institute for Pediatric Research, Department of Pediatrics, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Pittsburgh, PA 15224, USA shows that “IL-17 Receptor Signaling in the Lung Epithelium Is Required for Mucosal Chemokine Gradients and Pulmonary Host Defense against K. pneumoniae.” This research paper was published (online) in the 27 October 2016 issue of the journal “Cell Host and microbe” [One of the best research journals in “Infectious biology” with an I.F of 12+] by Prof. Jay K. Kolls, Kong Chen and others.

What we say:

On the foundation of this interesting finding, Dr L Boominathan PhD, Director-cum-chief Scientist of GBMD, reports that: Natural product-based therapy against Pulmonary bacterial pathogens: Hibiscus syriacus extract increases IL-17R and Chemokine CXCL5 expression and protects against infections caused by bacterial pathogen K. pneumoniae via upregulation of its target gene

What is known?

Prof. Jay K Koll’s research team has recently shown that deletion of IL-17R in lung epithelium results in a) impairment of neutrophil recruitment; b) defective bacterial clearance; and c) decreased expression of chemokine CXCL5. They have further shown that intranasal administration of CXCL5 restores neutrophil recruitment and bacterial clearance.

What we say: Research findings:

This study suggests, for the first time, a natural product-based therapy against Pulmonary bacterial pathogens. Hibiscus syriacus extract, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of IL-17R expression.

Figure 1 Hibiscus syriacus extract promotes clearance of pulmonary pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae via up-regulation of IL-17 and CXCLC5

Thereby, it may: (1) increase CXCL5 expression; (2) promote neutrophil recruitment; (3) promote clearance of pulmonary pathogen such as Klebsiella pneumoniae; and (4) strengthen mucosal immunity against pulmonary pathogens.

Therapeutic Opportunity:

Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Hibiscus syriacus extract or an active compound isolated from it” may be used to treat infections caused by pulmonary pathogen such as Klebsiella pneumoniae.
