Significance: Muscle atrophy is associated with a number of disease conditions, including sepsis, Cancer cachexia etc. This study suggests, for the first time, that Piceatannol, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may (1) decrease myostatin expression, (2) increase MyoD expression, (3) induce satellite cell proliferation; and (4) induce fiber hypertrophy. Thereby, it may inhibit muscle fiber atrophy and promote muscle growth. Thus, pharmacological formulations encompassing “Piceatannol or its analogues” may be used to treat sepsis, Cancer cachexia etc
