What is known?
Prof. Shin-ichiro Imai’s research team has recently shown that administering mice with NMN, for a year, results in mitigation of age-associated physiological decline, such as a) increased body weight; b) decreased energy metabolism plus utilization; c) decreased physical activity; d) increased insulin resistance; e) increased lipid profile; f) decreased eye function; g) decreased mitochondrial oxidative metabolism; and i) increased mitonuclear protein imbalance.
From Research findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests, for the first time, a natural product-based therapy for age-associated physiological decline. Shikonin, by decreasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the levels of Nampt and NMN.
