From Research Findings to Therapeutic opportunity:
This study suggests a natural product-based therapy for brain repair and life-span extension.
Piper betle leaf (PBLs) extract, by increasing the expression of its target gene, it may increase the expression of VGF and BDNF. Thereby, it may: 1) promote OP proliferation, 2) trigger myelination on neurons, 3) revert neural damage, 4) confer protection against brain ischemia, 5) promote consolidation of hippocampal memory, 6) produce anti-depressant like effects, 7) enhance glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, 8) decrease stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine levels and blood pressure, and finally, as a consequence, 9) prolong lifespan (figure 1).
